Site clearance after tragic explosion

End of March 2019. A gigantic explosion takes place in the early morning at a recently opened chemical factory in Egypt. A gas ball with a diameter of 16 meters and a wall thickness of 4 centimeters explodes and causes havoc. Ten people are killed and many injured. The phone rings at DDM. Whether we want to come to Egypt to secure everything and demolish the gas ball. And whether that is possible immediately.

DDM director Theo Velis, together with project manager Dave Straker, hastily traveled to Egypt. After the initial assessment of the damage, a team of DDM employees was flown in. They have secured the situation. A team of 15 Egyptians worked hard twelve hours a day, seven days a week to dismantle and clean up the exploded tank.

“A huge challenge,” says Dave. “The tank was 25 meters high and weighed 300 tons. We cut away the bottom first, then the top and some of the plates between the legs. Then we could hoist the legs away. A complex operation. Still, we managed to complete the project within four weeks of the incident. Without complications and with enormous team spirit.”

In addition to being technically complex, the project was also not easy in terms of communication. “The 15 local teammates spoke little to no English,” says Dave. “Moreover, they were emotionally involved in the explosion. Not only had they lost colleagues, but they had miraculously escaped death themselves, because the buses they took to work every morning had been seriously delayed that morning. All in all, it was an impressive job, which we can look back on with great satisfaction.”
