The Rheinbrücke Neuenkamp is a 777-meter-long cable-stayed bridge over the River Rhine near Duisburg and forms part of the A40 motorway. DDM carried out a complex, phased dismantling, with safety, environmental protection, and the operational continuity of road and shipping traffic as key priorities.
The project was completed on schedule and received the Civil Demolition Award at the World Demolition Awards 2025.
The 777-metre-long Rheinbrücke Neuenkamp exceeded its design capacity of 30,000 vehicles per day and was used by more than 100,000 vehicles. The bridge had to be demolished to make way for a new twin bridge. During the demolition, both the surrounding road traffic and shipping on the Rhine had to continue uninterrupted.
The bridge was removed in two directions starting from the center, with steel and concrete carefully dismantled and transported away.
Specially designed pylon caps and auxiliary cables with strand jacks enabled the safe disconnection of the existing cables.
Asbestos discovered in the asphalt was removed using ultra-high-pressure water jets, without risk to personnel or the environment.
Advanced waterproof platforms and containment systems prevented demolition debris from reaching the river, while shipping traffic continued as normal.
A 25-tonne pylon cap and hydraulically controlled strand cables safely distributed forces during the decoupling of the cables and the removal of the bridge segments.
The Quality and Health, Safety and the Environment policy is an ongoing process. That is why DDM is continuously working on improving all these areas to keep improving safety levels.
DDM was rewarded with a World Demolition Award in the Civils category.
Removing 5 arch bridges over the Amsterdam Rhine Canal was an intensive job. The schedule was tight and the expectations of all employees were high. But with a joint effort and incredible passion, DDM has successfully removed and recycled the 5 bridges within schedule.
