Crude Oil Tank Dismantling at Industrial Refinery

Philippines

Crude Oil Tank Dismantling at Industrial Refinery

The overall scope included the removal of crude oil tanks, LPG spheres, flare installations, other process installations, decommissioned buildings, OM tanks, and material recovery including scrap and metals.

A significant portion of the works consisted of the demolition of three large crude oil storage tanks with floating roofs.

Technical Scope – Crude Oil Tanks
The three crude oil tanks each had the following specifications:

  • Diameter: 73 meters
  • Height: 20 meters
  • Floating roof construction
  • Total combined weight: approximately 4,000 tonnes
  • Execution period: 4 months
  • Main equipment: 2 long-reach excavators with scrap shear attachments

Execution Methodology
The dismantling works were carried out using a fully mechanized demolition approach to maximize safety and efficiency.

  • An access opening was created in the tank wall.
  • The floating roofs were dismantled using excavators equipped with scrap shear attachments.
  • The tank walls were mechanically reduced to approximately 6 meters using long-reach excavators.
  • The lower shell rings, with a wall thickness of 38 mm, were removed by oxy-fuel cutting.
  • Steel plates were carefully cut to size during dismantling to optimize reuse and material recovery.

This method ensured a controlled demolition process with maximum material recovery and minimal manual intervention.
