Replacing rotary dryers

Dismantling and replacing two rotary dryers in the heart of an operational factory in Rotterdam requires detailed preparation. Exactly a job for DDM!

A completely flat work floor was first created outside. The two dryers were removed entirely through the facade, so that the asbestos-containing materials in the outer casing could remain intact. To prevent dust development, the dryers were first hosed down and wrapped in foil before being moved out of the building on rails.

In order to remove the dryers in their entirety, the rotating inner casing had to be attached to the outer casing. A custom frame held the dryers together. Once the frame was assembled, the dryer drivetrain and motors were removed.

The frame with the dryers was jacked up a few millimeters so that the supports under the dryers could be removed. The dryers were then lowered again, placed on the rails and dragged out. There they were jacked up to a height of about 1.5 meters. A Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) was placed underneath the dryers, which then maneuvered the equipment out of the very tight space between the buildings.

DDM specialists later installed the new dryers using exactly the same method and with the same equipment. The old dryers were removed from the building, loaded on a low loader and transported to the DDM yard in De Meern for removal of the asbestos. The work was completed within budget and one day ahead of schedule.
