DDM completed the full dismantling of a former tank storage terminal in Hamburg-Harburg, Germany. This four-year project ranks among the largest and most technically challenging industrial deconstruction projects within the German energy sector.
On a 55-hectare site, divided into 24 work zones, DDM carried out the complete demolition and remediation in a complex environment featuring port infrastructure, underground installations, and partially active pipelines and cable routes. The site also presented a range of environmental challenges, including contamination with PFAS, hydrocarbons, asbestos, and mineral wool (MMMF), as well as areas with potential unexploded ordnance.
Within this dynamic and high-risk context, DDM demonstrated its strength in managing complex industrial projects, with safety, planning, and environmental care as absolute priorities.
Over the course of 155,172 working hours, 24,426 tonnes of scrap were removed and 30,124 tonnes of waste were responsibly processed, including 2,275 tonnes of hazardous waste. In addition, 20,000 m³ of soil was relocated and 125 kilometres of piping were professionally dismantled, of which 100 kilometres were internally cleaned. The site was completely cleared of installations and handed over construction-ready, prepared for future infrastructure development.
The project was executed in accordance with a strict HSEQ framework, featuring transparent reporting and continuous risk management. Thanks to a stable and experienced project team, strong leadership, and intensive on-site collaboration, the work was carried out in a controlled, efficient, and safe manner.
This dismantling project in Hamburg underscores DDM’s position as a reliable partner for large-scale industrial demolition and remediation projects within the energy and petrochemical sector. We combine technical expertise, execution strength, and environmentally responsible practices to safely transform complex industrial sites for a new future.
The Quality and Health, Safety and the Environment policy is an ongoing process. That is why DDM is continuously working on improving all these areas to keep improving safety levels.
DDM was rewarded with a World Demolition Award in the Civils category.
