In Vianen, DDM successfully carried out a complex infrastructure dismantling project: the complete arch bridge over the Lek was carefully dismantled and removed. This project, with a duration of 8 months and involving 5,000 tonnes of steel, required precise preparation, specialized techniques, and a sustainable approach.
Large-scale and technically challenging bridge dismantling
The arch bridge in Vianen measured over 160 metres in length, 28 metres in width, and had an arch height of 32 metres. In addition, the approach spans and multiple piers were removed as part of the project.
Due to its size and complexity, a phased and controlled dismantling approach was chosen. Large sections of the bridge were carefully disconnected and removed, with logistics and safety as key priorities.
The actual removal of the bridge structure was completed within 15 hours, after which the bridge components were further processed and reduced in size for transport and recycling.
24/7 execution with minimal disruption
To ensure the project was carried out efficiently and on schedule, work was performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Through the smart deployment of equipment and transport by water, the impact on the surrounding area and infrastructure was kept to a minimum.
Sustainable dismantling and maximum recycling
Sustainability played a central role in this project. The work was carried out in accordance with level 5 of the CO₂ Performance Ladder, with a strong focus on reducing emissions.
Recovered steel and concrete were almost entirely reused as raw materials for new applications. The use of HVO100 fuel, transport with Euro 6 engines, and optimized transport distances further reduced CO₂ emissions.
A technically challenging project executed safely, efficiently, and fully circular.
The Quality and Health, Safety and the Environment policy is an ongoing process. That is why DDM is continuously working on improving all these areas to keep improving safety levels.
DDM was rewarded with a World Demolition Award in the Civils category.
Removing 5 arch bridges over the Amsterdam Rhine Canal was an intensive job. The schedule was tight and the expectations of all employees were high. But with a joint effort and incredible passion, DDM has successfully removed and recycled the 5 bridges within schedule.
