"DISMANTLING OF PIPEWORK IN LIVE REFINERY"

Dismantling of Pipework Rotterdam

DISMANTLING Projects | Dismantling of Pipework

Within a live refinery in Rotterdam, we removed 400 meters of 10-inch pipe using cold-cutting techniques. A complex job: the pipe was in the middle of the pipe bridge and access was restricted. The adjacent pipes were all live and continued to transfer product across the site. Due to the tight nature of the pipe bridge, access to cut and remove sections of pipework was challenging and required careful planning.

A comprehensive project safety plan and risk analysis was developed prior to the work commencing. Once all safety briefings were given and permits were received, we undertook all necessary measurements of the pipework to develop the cutting sequence. We then drilled holes at pre-determined intervals to measure atmospheric conditions and check for residual products within the pipes

Once all safety checks were completed, we started to cut the pipework using compressed air saws. Attaching the saws to the pipework using chains to hold them in place, ensured that hand arm vibration was kept to an absolute minimum throughout the project. During the cutting phase, it was imperative that the cutting blades were cooled to maximise cutting performance. Working from scaffold access platforms, DDM operatives used chain hoists and beam clamps to lower the pipes to the scaffold work platform in a controlled manner

Once the pipes were stockpiled in the designated area, a mobile crane was used to lift all pipe sections on to the back of a trailer and transported away from the site for recycling. This process continued until the remainder of the 16-inch pipe was removed.

The client was very satisfied with the end result and in particular the way in which DDM dealt with the project specific challenges, client safety concerns and workmanship required in this project.
